I taught sixth grade for four years, fifth grade for three, and am currently teaching second grade part time. For two years I was the curriculum coordinator for the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum/Chicago Academy of Sciences, where I also went into the Chicago public schools to teach science lessons. I also have my Master of Education in Science Education. In addition to my trade books, I have written ten leveled readers on both fiction and nonfiction topics. |

This presentation shares the basics about insects, such as body parts, camouflage, classification, and the orders of insects. In addition, I will bring mounted insects to compare and contrast and read from my book Don’t Squash That Bug! This presentation also works for a reading or Open House night, where I can sign books. |

Do you have a great idea for a children’s book? Did you know that most authors never meet the person who illustrates their book? This presentation is geared toward adults on the Do’s and Don’ts of getting published as a children’s author. As the network representative for the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators for the Dundee, IL area, I can share the different venues of children’s book writing, as well as how to submit a manuscript. There will be 15 minutes reserved for Q & A. |

The experience of a science fair is to allow students to examine a question and discover the answer. Many students (and teachers!) could use some guidance on where to begin and how to put it all together while still having fun. In this presentation, I will walk the students through the basics of creating a unique science fair project. While working at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum in Chicago, I not only judged science fair projects in the Chicago Public Schools system but also spoke to classes about the components of designing an experiment. I also wrote two books on science fairs: Science Fair Projects: Ecosystems and Science Fair Projects: Chemistry. |

Are you in need of an extra set of hands getting the students ready for the science fair? Are the students having trouble finding an idea for a project? As a former judge for the Chicago Public Schools science fair, as well as an author of two science fair books, I will help the teacher and students create a unique and fun science fair project. I am also willing to give a presentation for parents, such as for a parents' night. |
